Some state no-call lists to take effect Wednesday

Jackson, Mississippi-AP -- While the national do-not-call registry winds its way through the courts, five states are to put their own versions into effect this week.

And officials in some of the 28 other states that have their own registries say the best advice is "come out swinging" against telemarketers.Mississippi, Arizona, California, North Carolina and South Dakota are to jump on the bandwagon Wednesday. One Mississippi official says he can't wait to start enforcing the law.Mississippi's law has many exemptions, including car dealers, funeral homes, stock brokers, insurance and real estate agents.Missouri, whose no-call law took effect in July, is the prime example of a state that aggressively fines violators and even pursues some into court.Missouri has collected more than one (m) million dollars in fines and officials say complaints have declined.
