JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Memorial Day marks the start of summer vacation. On May 30th thousands in Region 8 will be hitting the road. Before you do, the Jonesboro Police Department warns you better click your seatbelt or get a ticket.
The JPD is joining police forces across the nation for the annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign. It will run from May 23 to June 5.
While research shows more people are using seat belts than ever before, far too many still aren't and they're paying the ultimate price. It's estimated that nearly a third of lives lost could have been saved if they had been wearing a seat belt.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says those least likely to buckle up are teens, young adults, males, nighttime drivers, motorists on rural roads and those traveling in pickup trucks.
According to NHTSA, regular seat belt use is the most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. Research shows that when used properly seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45 percent. The risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.
Several other Region 8 police and sheriff's departments are also participating in the annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign, including the Baxter County and the Sharp County Sheriff's Offices.
