JONESBORO (ASU) – The Arkansas State football team placed 16 players, including four first-team selections, on Phil Steele's 2011 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Team that was announced today by the annual football publication.
Phil Steele's preseason all-conference selections are made up of four teams and feature 112 players from across the Sun Belt. The Red Wolves' 16 players chosen were the second most in the conference behind only Troy with 17. Florida International had 16 selections as well, but those choices were made up of just 14 different players.
A-State had at least one player listed at 11 different positions, including quarterback, running back, wide receiver, center, offensive tackle, defensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker, cornerback, safety and punt return.
The Red Wolves had four players named first team offense or defense, matching FIU for the second most in the conference. Representing ASU on the first team were senior wide receiver Dwayne Frampton, senior center Tom Castilaw, senior linebacker Demario Davis and senior corner Darron Edwards.
Earning second-team recognition were junior receivers Josh Jarboe and Taylor Stockemer, senior defensive lineman Dorvus Woods, sophomore defensive tackle Amos Draper and senior safety Kelcie McCray. The Red Wolves' combined nine players on the top two offensive and defensive teams tied FIU for the most in the league.
ASU's third-team selections included junior quarterback Ryan Aplin, senior running back Derek Lawson, junior wide receiver Allen Muse, senior defensive end Brandon Joiner and junior linebacker Nathan Herrold. Offensive lineman James Williams and wide receiver Rod Hall, who made the list as punt-return specialist, were both named fourth team.
