Baseball Family Night to launch Sun Belt Conference Championship festivities

From the Sun Belt Conference

The Sun Belt Conference will kick off the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship on Tuesday, May 24 with the Family Night Celebration at Warhawk Field on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Family Night is open and free to the public and will feature an awards ceremony, a student-athlete home run derby and a fireworks show. Gates open at 7 p.m.

Former ULM standout pitcher Ben Sheets will be in attendance to throw out the first pitch of the home run derby. Sheets was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1999 and won a gold medal during the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Sydney, Austraila. The former Warhawk great was also the first Brewer pitcher to start an All-Star game when he started the 2008 All-Star game, the last All-Star game in the original Yankee Stadium.

The family night event will feature a face painting and colored hair spray station for kids and will include giveaways and an autograph session with the student-athletes. The first 100 kids (ages 12 and under) to arrive to the ballpark will receive a FREE set of Sun Belt Conference baseball autograph cards.

The home run derby, which begins at 7:45 p.m., will feature a student-athlete from each team participating in the tournament. Student-athletes will be divided into East and West divisions determined by the conference office. Each batter will engage in two rounds – the first round will consist of 10 outs and the second round will consist of six outs. The division that has the most combined home runs at the end of both rounds will be declared the winner.

Following the home run derby, fans will be treated to a fireworks show.

The Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship is set for May 25-29 at Warhawk Field. For additional information on the tournament, visit www.sunbeltsports.org.
