BATESVILLE, Ark. - Wilson Powell, business manager of the Batesville Daily Guard and a well-known local historian, died yesterday after a long stay in a hospital.  He was 88 years old.

A child of farmers, Powell built an education that began in one-room schoolhouses into a career in which he kept the newspaper's books and served as a school board member and in numerous other community posts.

Powell was active in newspapering, conservation and community service, serving on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Batesville School Board, city commissions and historical groups.

Powell was reared on farms as his family moved to several places during his youth.  He began work at the Guard in 1935 in a part-time slot, signing on full time three years later.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
