JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A potential severe weather outbreak is expected in Region 8 this afternoon and evening as much of northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri  are under a very rare high risk for severe weather.

Storms will fire across AR and move into and through Region 8 by mid-afternoon and will have the capability of producing tornadoes, as well as large hail and damaging winds.

The dynamics and ingredients to produce discrete supercells are available to these storms.  A strong upper level low is moving across KS and Central MO today, along with a trailing cold front. As it meets with the warm, moist, unstable air in Region 8, we will see these storms develop.

The possibility exists for these storms to become long lived, and continue into the overnight.

Safe shelters will be open at:

  • University Heights Elementary
  • Fox Meadow Elementary
  • Westside Middle School
  • Bay High School
  • MacArthur Jr. High
  • Swifton Middle School
  • Harrisburg HS
  • Weiner HS
