MOUNTAIN HOME, AR (KAIT) – A Region 8 man will have to come up with a lot of cash to get out of jail after investigators say he stole nearly $20,000 in gold coins.
On Wednesday Baxter County Sheriff's deputies arrested Parhaam Akhavi at his home in Mountain Home.
Investigators say Akhavi stole four gold coins dating back to the early 1900s and 28 Olympic gold coins from a locked safe at Henderson home. The coins were valued at $20,000. According to Sheriff John Montgomery, Akhavi pawned the coins and several others for just $5,200.
When deputies searched his home they found a large quantity of coins and evidence, including maps and detailed documents, indicating Akhavi was conspiring to commit as many as 10 other burglaries and thefts.
While interviewing Akhavi, deputies say he admitted taking the coins and selling them. He then apparently used the money to buy other items, including a pickup truck that he later gave to the victim.
Akhavi has been charged with breaking or entering, theft of property, conspiracy to commit theft and criminal attempt to commit theft. He's being held in the Baxter County Detention Center in lieu of $150,000 bond.
