NEWPORT, ARKANSAS (KAIT) --Law enforcement and judicial officers in the 3rd Judicial District met in Newport today to learn about new legislature that will affect how they conduct the fight against drugs.
Prosecutor Henry Boyce said that officers may not like the new law since it appears that the legislature is taking a softer approach. Boyce says he feels confident that enough tools remain to keep those criminals off the street that need to be off and that when the act goes into affect it will be a major step toward keeping jails and prisons over crowding.
Boyce says that there will still need to be jails and prisons built as the population increases but the new laws will keep those behind bars that really need to be.
About 30 officers from a variety of departments and agencies attended today's conference.
