MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KAIT) – The EPA has tested bacteria levels in the water at Birds Point Spillway.
According to the EPA, the samples taken this week show that E. coli bacteria levels are well below Missouri's official standard for swimming, but that doesn't mean would be swimmers can go diving into the water just yet. Swimming is still considered dangerous since the water is still carrying debris with it.
EPA says the testing was done to determine if emergency responders were at risk for health problems should they come in contact with the floodwater.
Symptoms from E. coli infection include, but are not limited to abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
