Former Hogs assistant Chris Graves named new men's basketball coach at Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham-Southern promoted Chris

Graves to men's basketball coach a day after Mitch Cole resigned.

Graves spent the past three seasons as an assistant under Cole,

who left Thursday to take an assistant coaching position in the Big

12 Conference.

Cole declined to say which school until his contract was final.

Graves helped Division III Birmingham-Southern rebuild after it

didn't field a team in the 2006-07 season. The Panthers won the

Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title and the NCAA

Provisional Tournament last season.

Graves spent five seasons as a high school head coach. Before

that he worked for five years in the college ranks at his alma

mater, John Brown University, the University of Arkansas, and

Tennessee State University.
