Student Voters' Rights Violated

Little Rock, AR --A federal judge has ruled that Clark County Clerk Rhonda Williams violated the rights of college students by removing them from the county's voter rolls.

In an order made public yesterday, federal Judge George Howard Junior issued a permanent injunction barring Williams from rejecting applications for voter registration from Ouachita Baptist University and Henderson State University students.

Williams was sued before last year's election after purging students from voter rolls to comply with an order from Circuit Judge John A. Thomas. The circuit judge acted after a suit was filed by a Clark County resident who argued the students shouldn't be allowed to vote.

The American Civil Liberties Union sued on behalf of students, including Governor Huckabee's daughter, Sarah. The governor was initially named as a defendant, though he was later dropped. The ruling states that plaintiffs are entitled to attorneys' fees and costs.
