JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KAIT) - A former Region 8 sheriff has been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty in court Monday.

According to the Jefferson County Circuit Court Office, former Carter County Sheriff Tommy Adams pleaded guilty Monday to distribution of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

A judge sentenced him to 12 years in prison.

Adams pleaded guilty in April to federal charges for stealing firearms that had been seized as evidence, then selling some of them. Adams is serving a ten-year sentence on those federal charges.

The 12 year sentence will run concurrently with the federal sentence.

Adams' former deputy, Steffanie Kearbey, pleaded guilty to the same federal charges.

Adams was arrested in April 2011, and resigned days later.
