JONESBORO, Ark., (ASU) – Arkansas State senior catcher Tyler Smith has been signed to a free agent contract by the Kansas City Royals, Friday.
Smith is the second Red Wolves player picked up by the Royals this offseason, as fellow ASU senior Andy Ferguson was taken by the Royals with the 546th overall pick in the MLB draft.
"What a great opportunity for Tyler to continue his baseball career professionally," said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. "We think he will be a great fit for the Royals organization. He will do a great job behind the plate for them and continue to improve his skill level."
Smith started in 50 games appearing in 53 overall this past season for the Red Wolves batting .263 with 47 hits, 29 RBI and 25 runs scored. He also had eight doubles and two home runs. Smith also threw out 28 runners who were caught stealing and posted a .365 on base percentage.
