PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - The city of Paragould has a new sales tax after the measure was voted on a passed by the citizens of the city.
The unofficial results showed that 924 people voted for the tax while 470 people voted against it. The sales tax will be 1/4 of a cent, which is 3/4 of a cent lower than the tax was in 2010.
Paragould Mayor Mike Gaskill says the money from the tax will go toward economic development by attracting new businesses and propping up those that are existing.
Gaskill says that funds like the revenue that will come from this tax is crucial to local and state economies. "The communities that have money and resources to partner with the state are more apt to be successful in job recruitment," said Gaskill.
Early voting started last Tuesday led up to the actual election day of this Tuesday.
