GREENE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – If your roof is damaged you could be targeted for a rip off. With so many in need of a roof repair some who seem to want to help could really hurt. Anytime disaster strikes there is the possibility scammers could be right behind the storm clouds. That's why we have some tips to make sure you won't get ripped off.
"I was shocked. I was absolutely shocked," said homeowner Angela Barnum. Barnum returned home after the storm on Monday to find her home damaged.
"There was big branch through the house. You go in my bedroom and see the branch through the house and the sky was exposed," said Barnum.
Her roof is one of the many damaged from Monday's storms in Greene County. The past couple of months have brought this type of damage all across the area.
"The first thing I did was contact my insurance company and do the steps that they told me to do," said Barnum.
She had a tree company come out and remove the broken branch and help her cover her roof with tarps. Now she is waiting on an adjustor to come out and take a look at the damage.
"In the wake of a storm we want you to be very, very careful," said Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel.
McDaniel said when you have damage be careful of who you get to do the work.
"Always be careful when someone solicits you. If they knock on your door or call you that is not necessarily a bad thing but it ought to raise red flags," said McDaniel.
For many caught off guard by the damage it may be hard to know what to do. "This is the first experience I've ever had with something like this," said Barnum.
"If you need work done do your own research and figure out who you think will be the best vendor the best contractor and make your own judgment," said McDaniel.
