JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Appalachian League is one of the steps that prospects take on their road to Major League Baseball. Four standouts with ties to Northeast Arkansas will play in the league this summer.
The Burlington Royals feature three ASU teammates. Murray Watts, Andy Ferguson & Tyler Smith will all play in North Carolina. Watts was in extended spring training after spending part of the 2011 season with the Kane County Cougars. Ferguson was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 18th round. Smith signed with the Royals as a free agent.
Marked Tree alum Richie Tate has been assigned to the Danville Braves in Virginia. Tate was 1-0 with a 5.19 ERA in 2010 with the Gulf Coast League Braves. He was picked in the 14th round of the 2010 MLB Draft.
Opening Day for the Appalachian League is Tuesday, June 21st.
