Mom That Abandoned Baby in West Memphis Now Facing Charges

October 22, 2003  -- Posted at 7:41 AM CDT

WEST MEMPHIS, AR  -- The mother of a newborn baby placed in a backpack and left in a pickup truck on a parking lot in West Memphis has been arrested on a felony charge.

Police arrested 27-year-old Dana Jean Harrington of Marion at her home. Harrington is charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

The baby was found October second, examined at a hospital in West Memphis, then transferred to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, where she underwent surgery for a minor health problem.

The baby is in the custody of the state Human Services Department.

Police said Harrington told them she was on disability for clinical depression and didn't think she could take care of the baby. Investigators are trying to identify the father of the newborn.
