South Alabama football stepping up after fast start

MOBILE, Alabama (Mobile Press-Register) - South Alabama has gone 17-0 against a lightweight schedule in its first two seasons, but in 2011 it will face its first NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision opponents in North Carolina State and Kent State on back-to-back road trips.

However, the Jags can boast that they are the only one of 18 college football teams in the state to win its first 17 games.

Tuskegee was 10-7 (1894-1904) and West Alabama 10-6-1 (1938-40) in their first 17 games. Auburn (1892-96), UAB (1991-92) and Samford (1902-06) were each 9-6-2. Concordia of Selma was 9-8 (2005-06), Troy University 9-3-5 (1909-1921), North Alabama 8-9 (1949-50) and Alabama State 8-8-1 (1901-09).

Alabama was 6-11 (1892-96), as was Jacksonville State (1904-09). Birmingham-Southern (1904-10) and Huntingdon College (2003-05) were each 5-12, and Faulkner University in Montgomery was 1-16 (2007-08). (Records for Alabama A&M, Miles and Stillman were not available.
