POPLAR BLUFF, MO — A group of Region 8 men are being honored for selfless acts of courage.

Today, the John J. Pershing V-A Medical Center in Poplar Bluff hosted its annual wall of valor ceremony honoring men who received medals for valor in combat.

Specialist Jim Wooldridge was honored at the ceremony. In 1970, as a member of the army, he took part in defending a front-line assault in Vietnam. Using only his grenade, Wooldridge stopped the assault and saved his comrades. For his courage, he was awarded a bronze star with valor and a purple heart.

"Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do," said Wooldridge. "If it works out good, than that's great. If it doesn't, you just have to move on. It's an honor. It feels great."

Like Wooldridge, 11 other Region 8 veterans are being honored for their valor in combat. Their photos will now hang on the walls of several Region 8 V-A medical centers.
