BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) – Residents and business owners in one part of Batesville have an extra reason to feel safe. We first told you about a police substation opening up in Batesville a few months ago. The front room of a Citizens Bank branch on the western side of town has been remodeled into an office for the Independence County Sheriff's Department.
The western side of town has been slowly shrinking for the past several years. There are hopes, with this added police presence, that new businesses will choose to call the western side of the city home. There are officers who patrol the area and take reports and calls at the new office making the response time a lot faster for that part of town.
"I'm the traffic officer. Right now that is my office. I usually stay on office. I work traffic there I take reports it keeps the community from having to drive all the way across on the east side of town," said Corporal Ernie Gillihan.
Corporal Gillihan said the substation is not manned full time by an officer but if you need help or need to file a report call the main office and an officer will meet you at the substation. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for the new substation this Thursday.
