INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A new prescription drug drop box and drug incinerator are helping Independence County authorities keep drugs off the streets.
Thanks to Planter's Bank in Independence County, officials now have a drug drop box that's open to the public 24/7. Residents are welcome to drop off their old, unwanted or unused drugs any time they want.
Independence County Sheriff, Steve Jeffery said so far, the drop box has been unbelievably successful.
"We've had this in operation probably a month no and I would say we've got about 200 pounds of pills so far," Jeffery told Region 8 News. Jeffery said the drop box will benefit the county greatly. "It's just one way to keep these things off the street so people who don't need them can't get ahold of them."
The drug incinerator was paid for by a grant. Jeffery said the incinerator will burn up to 50 pounds of pills at a time, turning them into dust.
Jeffery said since the drop box has been so successful, they plans to use the incinerator once a week.
