KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City Public Schools Superintendent John Covington is delivering his first "State of the Schools" address.
Covington planned to talk about the historically troubled district's accomplishments and its future Thursday morning at Union Station and Thursday night at Paseo Academy.
The audience for the morning speech will include members of the business and civic community. The broader community is invited to the evening speech.
Covington was hired in April 2009. Since then, he has shaken things up by closing about 40% of the district's schools to balance its budget. He also piloted a program that groups students by ability and makes advancing to the next level based on gaining skills.
