MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Two people, including a Memphis police officer, were shot and killed at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Memphis Sunday night.

SLIDESHOW: Killed in the line of duty

Officers were dispatched to the hotel at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday concerning shots fired. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered one officer had been shot, along with a civilian.

Police Director Toney Armstrong said Officer Timothy Warren, a patrol officer with the department since 2003, died at Regional Medical Center after the shooting.

Warren was married with two small children.

"Our hearts go out to his family," Armstrong said Monday. "We ask for your continued prayers for his family, our department, and this city."

The second shooting victim, identified as Arthur Warren, 49, was pronounced dead inside the DoubleTree Hotel.

Meanwhile, the suspect was taken into police custody. Sources close to the investigation identified him as Alexander Haydel, of Cleveland, Mississippi.

Charges are expected to be filed Tuesday morning.

Investigators believe Haydel and his wife got into an argument in a room on the hotel's ninth floor and the woman's ex-husband, Warren, attempted to intervene.

"The suspect left the scene and went to a nearby vehicle and armed himself," Armstrong said. "He returned to the hotel, approached the victim, and shot him multiple times."

Upon hearing the gunshots, a DoubleTree Hotel employee alerted a police officer directing traffic at the Redbirds game across the street.

Officers quickly responded to the scene, including Officer Timothy Warren, who arrived in his personal truck.

Police were told the shooter had a room on the third floor, and went there first to clear guests.  They then received word of the shooting on the ninth floor.

Investigators said Officer Warren was killed in the hotel's stairwell somewhere between the eighth and tenth floors. Haydel was also taken into custody in the stairwell.

Though they are both from Cleveland, Mississippi, and had the same last name, investigators could find no relationship between Officer Timothy Warren and Arthur Warren.

Sunday night, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton called the situation very tragic, and asked for prayers from the community.

"We simply ask for the prayers of our great community," he said. "We assure our officers that we understand the harm they face every day."

The DoubleTree Hotel is directly across from AutoZone Park, where the Memphis Redbirds were playing Sunday night, and fireworks were planned to celebrate the Fourth of July.
