(WMC-TV) - Memphis police filed first degree murder charges Tuesday against the man accused of shooting a Memphis police officer and another man Sunday at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Memphis.

Alexander Haydel, 22, is charged with killing Officer Timothy Warren, 39, along with Arthur Warren, 49.

An affidavit of complaint obtained by Action News 5 details the chain of events that led to Tuesday's hotel shooting.

According to the affidavit, it all started on Beale Street, where police say Haydel and other family members were visiting from Cleveland, Mississippi.  On Beale, Haydel got into an argument with his wife during and bit her lip, cutting the inside of her mouth.

Arthur Warren, the woman's ex-husband, intervened, sparking an argument between the two men

Eventually, the whole family returned to the DoubleTree Hotel. Then, Haydel retrieved handguns from two of the three cars the family used to caravan to Memphis.

Haydel confronted Arthur Warren on the 9th floor of the hotel, pulled one of the guns from his waistband, and shot him.

When police showed up, officers were told there was a man down firing a gun on either the 8th or 9th floor of the hotel. Several officers went up the stairwell, getting off on the 8th floor.

Officer Timothy Warren continued up to the 9th floor, and ran into Haydel as he tried to escape down the stairs.

Investigators say Haydel shot and killed Warren, and then took the service weapon and two fully loaded magazines from Warren's duty belt.

According to the affidavit of complaint, Haydel told investigators he then used two tactics he learned while serving in the United States Army as an Infantryman: First, he positioned two fire extinguishers near Warren's body. Second, he went up the stairwell to "higher ground" to gain a tactical advantage on other officers who showed up to help Warren.

Citing knowledge of a "Buddy Response System," the affidavit says Haydel told investigators he planned to shoot the fire extinguishers when additional officers arrived, hoping the fire extinguishers would explode and, "...kill everyone in the blast radius."

Haydel, who does not have a criminal record in his hometown of Cleveland, Mississippi, is locked up at 201 Poplar without bond.

His first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
