JACKSONVILLE, AR - The 189th Airlift Wing of the Arkansas Air National Guard has a new commander. In a ceremony yesterday at Little Rock Air Force Base, members of the Air Guard welcomed Colonel Travis D. Balch as the airlift wing's new commander. He takes the place of Colonel Riley P. Porter.
The ceremony was also an occasion for the air guard to honor more than 100 members who have been deployed since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Porter, a former mayor of West Helena, returned a few weeks ago from a four-month assignment in Iraq. During his time there, he supervised the construction of an air base in Balad and commanded operations at Tallil Air Base.
