BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – After an attempt to smuggle contraband into the Baxter County Detention Center, two people are arrested and awaiting their appearance in Baxter County Circuit Court.

Baxter County Sheriff John F. Montgomery says 20-year-old Michael Anthony Behrens and 39-year-old Elizabeth J. Wilkins, both of Mountain Home, were arrested and charged with multiple offenses after police were informed of the two possibly sneaking contraband into the detention center through a hole in one of the windows on the back side of housing unit "B".

The sheriff says Behrens and Wilkins were attaching a vessel containing the contraband to a rope and sending it through the hole in the window to inmates on the other side.

According to Sheriff Montgomery, he and several deputies set up concealed surveillance cameras at the back of the building to catch the culprits. At 9 p.m. on July 13, officers say they watched Behrens and Wilkins pull up on Grey St. behind the detention center before Behrens got out of the car and delivered the contraband.

Sheriff Montgomery says he was able to stop the delivery from the inside, but Behren fled on foot. Wilkins, who was driving the car, was stopped and arrested. Later, a manhunt including a helicopter and search dogs revealed Behren's hiding spot which was located behind a home on Grey St.

Behrens is charged with:

          Furnishing Prohibited Articles - Felony

Possession of a Controlled Substance (K-2) - Misdemeanor

Possession of Controlled Substance (Marijuana) - Misdemeanor

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia - Misdemeanor

          Fleeing from Officer - Misdemeanor

Wilkins is charged with:

          Furnishing Prohibited Articles - Felony

Possession of Controlled Substance (K-2) - Misdemeanor

Possession of Controlled Substance (Marijuana) - Misdemeanor

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia - Misdemeanor

Behrens is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond, and Wilkins is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond. Both will appear in Baxter County Circuit Court at a later time. The contraband seized included a substantial amount of food and candy, marijuana, K-2 (synthetic marijuana), and tobacco.

The Baxter County Sheriff's Office, Mountain Home Police, Arkansas State Police, Officers from the North Central Unit, and the Arkansas Department of Corrections all participated in this arrest.

The investigation is continuing into the events and circumstances surrounding this incident.
