Neighbor calls police after man makes off with scrap metal

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – One man is behind bars after a neighbor catches him stealing scrap metal from a home.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Paul Wesley Smith was arrested after a neighbor called police saying he was stealing scrap metal and striping car parts from a home on Highway 91.

Police say when they stopped Smith, officers noticed the scrap metal and car parts in the back of the truck. Smith told police he did not have permission to take the items. He was arrested, and the property was returned to the rightful owner. The value of the metal taken was estimated at around $1,900.

Smith is charged with theft of property and criminal trespass.
