PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - A Greene County school district will get to seek approval to build a shooting range on land adjacent to a landfill.
The Northwest Arkansas Solid Waste Management District's board of directors agreed Tuesday to allow Greene County Tech School District officials to seek approval from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality.
District officials had asked Paragould Mayor Mike Gaskill about possibly building the range for trap and skeet shooting teams from that district and other districts to use.
Gaskill told the Paragould Daily Press that the 60 acres of land has been sitting there unused since the landfill opened. But he says he told officials that environmental regulations would have to be met first.
There are concerns about possible runoff water contamination by clay particles and lead from firearms discharge.
