Huckabee Forming Task Force to Tackle Education Issues

November 7, 2003 - Posted at 7:41 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Huckabee is forming a task force to look at education in Arkansas and to recommend ways to help state colleges and universities produce more graduates.

Arkansas often ranks at or near the bottom among the states in the number of residents with a college degree, and Huckabee says a better educated population is critical to the state's economic growth.

The governor says a 15-member Blue Ribbon Committee for Higher Education will begin meeting next month.  He wants the group to produce a report within six months that includes recommended changes that the governor says could be addressed in a special session next year or in the 2005 regular legislative session.

The governor named Phil Ford, chairman of the state Higher Education Coordinating Board, to head the higher education task force.  The other members will be named next week.
