Heat dangers for outside pets

JONESBORO (KAIT) - Everyone has been feeling the heat in over the past couple weeks.

Officer McGinnis from the Jonesboro Animal Control says that this extreme heat has local residents looking out for our animals.

"Right now, we're averaging about forty calls a week. And that's basically related to the heat, to make sure. We get calls all the time. Dog in the backyard has no water or no shade. Or it's in the direct sunlight."

To keep your canine companion healthy, cool, and happy, McGinnis has a few tips.

"Make sure you have shade for them, proper shelter, don't keep them tied up, chained up. We do have a chaining ordinance. Make sure they always have water."

Officer McGinnis adds that anyone who persistently neglects their outside pets can be charged with animal cruelty.
