New Joplin footage shows importance in finding safe spot quickly

JONESBORO (KAIT) - New footage has been released from the deadly Joplin, Missouri EF-5 tornado that killed 160 people and damaged close to 8,000 homes and businesses.

A Joplin school's security cameras captured dramatic video as the tornado tore through the building.

It goes to show how finding that safe spot quickly is very important.

The wind tossed tables, chairs, and other large pieces of debris across the school.

The Joplin school was no match for the destructive power of the EF-5 rated tornado.

When the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for your county, time is precious.

For larger buildings such as a shopping mall or church, get to an interior room.

Corners are safer than the middle of walls, they offer a ninety-degree angle of protection.

Find the north or east side of the building, since a tornado's path is typically from the southwest to northeast.

Also, have something to protect your head as broken glass and wood splinters become flying objects.
