MILTON, NH (WMUR/CNN) – A large shark was discovered discarded in the woods along a country road in Milton, NH.
And the smell is causing quite a stink.
Lloyd Ellis said he's seen unusual things trashed in the woods near his home before, but nothing like the 6-foot, 8-inch shark discovered by his brother.
"He happened to smell something that didn't smell right like a dead animal or something and he came across it Thursday night," Ellis said.
The shark was found discarded on private property, not far from a busy route in the Milton area.
"I can only think that either someone didn't have a license, because you have to have a license to fish in the ocean and was going to bring it home," Ellis said. "And someone said, 'Hey dude, you need a license to fish in the ocean,' or something like that so, panicking, they probably said, 'Well I guess we've got to get rid of the evidence.'"
There is a local pond in Milton, but the nearest salt water is nearly an hour away. So this finding is causing different reaction throughout the town.
"You'd think you'd see a deer out in the woods on the ground, but a shark? That's unheard of," said Gui Leighton.
"This is awesome, I love it," said Peter Jacobs. "It's totally shark week, perfect timing."
Milton police and New Hampshire fish and game were called. They did come out to investigate, but decided to leave the shark where it was dumped and let nature take its course.
"Just dead rotten carcasses smell, you know, not pleasant," Ellis said. "Not pleasant at all, no."
Neighbors are anything but happy with the smell.
"It should have been buried or something. They should have disposed of it or something," said a neighbor. "It's only going to create more havoc with different animals coming around, coyotes or bears or whatever.
