JONESBORO, Ark. (8/10/11) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team announced has 2011-12 schedule, which features a home preseason tournament as part of its fall schedule and nine contests in Jonesboro during the spring.
The Red Wolves will participate in four fall tournaments, including the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., slated for Sept. 16-18, the ASU Invitational in Jonesboro scheduled for Oct. 7-9, the Regional Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., set for Oct. 20-23 and the Houston Invitational in Houston Texas that will be played Nov. 4-6. ASU's home tournament will be held at Allen Park.
"I am excited about our schedule this year," first-year head coach Marina Engelbrecht said. "It will give our team a great opportunity to see all levels of competition within Division I tennis. Our fall schedule allows our team to compete with teams in our ITA region. This is a great opportunity for us to get a regional ranking. I am very excited about our Red Wolves Invitational we will have in October. It was a great success last year, and this year we have more teams coming in. It is a great time for the community to come out and watch our girls compete."
Arkansas State will open regular- season play Jan. 29 at Allen Park against Tennessee Martin. The Red Wolves will then hit the road for a West Coast swing against a pair of schools from Colorado. ASU will play Colorado State Feb. 3, followed by its Sun Belt Conference opener against Denver Feb. 4.
ASU will return to Jonesboro Feb. 11 to take on Southeast Missouri State before embarking on a six match road trip. The Red Wolves will travel to Indiana Feb. 17 to play the University of Evansville followed by a match in Murray, Ky., on Feb. 18 against Murray State. The squad will be in Carbondale, Ill., Feb. 24-25 for pair of matches against Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. Arkansas State will travel to Louisiana March 2 to take on SBC opponent Louisiana-Monroe followed by a trip to Birmingham, Ala., on March 10 to take on UAB.
The Red Wolves return home March 16 for a match against Northwestern State University, but will then travel to Nacogdoches, Texas on March 18 to play Stephen F. Austin.
The team will host in-state opponent Central Arkansas March 28 and will then take on Middle Tennessee March 30. The Red Wolves will host UALR April 4, followed by a trip to Alabama on April 6-7 to play Troy and South Alabama. The team will be back in Jonesboro April 9 to play host to Lamar, followed by a match against the University of Texas at El Paso on April 13.
ASU will wrap up regular-season play in Jonesboro April 15 against Southern Mississippi before playing in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Denton, Texas on April 19-22.
