Summerlin takes lead in QB battle at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis coach Larry Porter says sophomore

Andy Summerlin came out of this weekend's scrimmage with a slight

edge in the team's quarterback competition.

Freshman Taylor Reed and Wake Forest transfer Skylar Jones also

are vying for the starting job. Jones, a senior, is the only QB in

camp with Bowl Subdivision experience, according to The Commercial

Appeal (

Summerlin ended spring practice atop the depth chart and entered

fall camp as the No. 1 quarterback.

Porter says that overall the quarterback play was about average

during the scrimmage. He says he's looking for more consistency,

but says as a group the quarterbacks are making strides in the

right direction.

The Tigers open the season Sept. 1 against Mississippi State at

the Liberty Bowl.
