Caruthersville officers remember fellow officer

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

A dedicated officer, great father, and fun-loving jokester. That's how fellow officers describe Caruthersville Police Officer Evan Burns, who died Tuesday during a high speed chase.

Caruthersville City Marshall says the visitation for Burns will be Friday 9:00 AM to Noon at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia, IL. The funeral will follow at the First United Methodist Church, and procession to the Fairlawn Cemetery.

29-year-old Deonta Williamson of Hayti and O'Fallon is in the Pemiscot County Jail charged with murder, after crashing his Escalade into Burns' patrol vehicle.

"It's a sad day in Caruthersville," said Riggs.

"We're going to miss him, he was a great guy, I just couldn't say enough great things about him, City of Caruthersville took a hard hit today," said fellow officer Austin Delilse.

Officers remembered Burns by polishing his trophies as a sharp shooter three years in a row, and talking about good times with him as the firearms instructor, and a friend.

"I would describe him as a great officer, a very, very outgoing officer, an asset to our community," said Delilse.

"Very fun guy, liked to joke a lot," said fellow officer Tony Jones.

"Very good sense of humor, a practical joker," said Delilse.

"He loved his other officers here, he joked with us, cut up and everything, but when it was always said and done and it was time to take care of business he was there," said Riggs.

"He loved his child, a very proud father," said Jones.

While the Caruthersville officers support each other by wearing a ribbon over their badge, and putting a wreath at the scene on Highway 84, they say they also appreciate the support from the community and other law enforcement.

"My phone has been crazy, all the other guys phones have been blowing up from people calling them," said Riggs.

"It's not easy, it's the hardest thing we've been through so far," said Delilse.

"A lot of sadness, a loss of a fellow friend, fellow officer, and a brother," said Jones.

"You know when you close your eyes...it's pretty tough...but we're strong, we'll make it through," said Riggs.

"You never know in this job here, you come to work and expect to go home to your family, in a day you don't know what's going to happen," said Jones.

"You know it's a tough job, its a rewarding job though knowing that you're helping people and I think Evan loved doing that," said Riggs.
