EDMONSON, AR - The Edmonson police chief and an officer in that tiny Crittenden County town have been charged with criminal slander under an obscure state law.  The charge accuses Police Chief James Rainey and officer Ozell Craft of saying things about a state trooper that damaged his standing within the State Police.

The trooper, Sammy D. Koons, claims the two acted after he stopped Craft for speeding.  Craft was taking his wife to the hospital for treatment of an injured foot, and claims he was going 78 miles per hour.  Koons says Craft was going 98 miles per hour.  Craft also claims Koons treated him rudely, and Craft's boss, Rainey, filed a complaint with State Police.  Koons says he has videotape of the stop that shows otherwise.

Prosecutor Fletcher Long says he plans to review the case before proceeding, including the constitutionality of the law.
