ASU to Build New $4 Million Facility in Newport

November 20, 2003 - Posted at 4:07 p.m. CDT

NEWPORT, AR - Arkansas State University plans to break ground in January on a new $4 million community and student center at its Newport campus.

The 35,000-square foot building will be a 'one-stop shop' for students, and will house admissions, records, student advisement, financial aid, the book store and food services.  The facility will also have an audio/visual room and a room for community events.

ASU-Newport Vice Chancellor for Physical Affairs said, "We have a lot more activity on the campus and several more students than we had twelve years ago when we were a vocational technical school...and so it has necessitated our developing spaces that we think will really enhance our campus."

ASU-Newport has seen a significant rise in enrollment figures recently.  The school had just over 800 students in the fall of 2002, compared to 1,100 this fall.
