Bootheel Man Died in Illinois Accident Due to Incorrect Seat Belt Use

November 21, 2003 - Posted at 8:03 a.m. CDT

Marion, IL - A Missouri Bootheel man who died in a September auto accident apparently had his seat belt fastened the wrong way.

A Williamson County coroner's jury ruled yesterday that 67-year-old William Arthur Bailey of Holland (Pemiscot County) died September 4 because he was wearing his shoulder belt under his arm.

Investigators say Bailey had been sitting in the back seat of a car that collided with another, on Illinois 148 near Marion.

The force of the accident caused the shoulder belt to fracture Bailey's ribs.  The broken ribs then punctured several of his organs.
