Food gathered after harvest to help the hungry

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT)- Hunger advocates and farmers came together to help fight hunger across Region 8 with a gleaning.

The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance and the Society of St. Andrew, hosted an event Tuesday where watermelons were picked.  Inmates with the Grimes prison helped hand pick the melons that were left in the field after the harvest.

All of the fruit gathered up Tuesday will be distributed through the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas in Jonesboro and their network of agencies.  According to the latest hunger study, over 5,000 people visit a shelter, soup kitchen or food pantry every week in Northeast Arkansas.

The gleaning took place at Bill Landreth's farm in Newport.
