(CNN) - According to a recent study released by the National Association of Child Care Resource Referral Agencies (NACCRRA), parents in most states are paying more for child care than they would for a public university education.
The exact dollar amount varies from a low of about $4,500 in Mississippi to more than $18,000 in Massachusetts.
The study found in 36 states, one year of infant day care is more expensive than a year of public college.
Most parents in the U.S. shell out more than 10 percent of their income on infant child care.
Organizers of the study found the cost of childcare has gone up 1.9 percent over the past year.
If a preschooler is added to the equation, the cost is nearly as high as a monthly mortgage payment for most families.
