JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The battle against drugs continued Wednesday in Northeast Arkansas as over 100 people throughout Region 8 News learned about drug addiction.
The monthly Out of the Dark Coalition meeting took place at Mid-South Health Systems through the noon hour on Wednesday. State Drug Director, Fran Flener spoke with attendants about a number of different drug-related issues.
"You know, we're learning so much about drug addiction itself and how addiction changes the brain and how addiction is greater and quicker and faster among young people whose brain is still developing than older people," Flener said.
Flener also touched on the topic of prescription drugs and how local law enforcement agencies are helping fight that battle.
"Prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing substance abuse type in the nation," Flener said. "We have had two statewide take-backs. One in September and one in April and in those two events, which lasted for four hour on a Saturday, we took in 6 and a half tons of pills."
According to the State Crime Lab, that amount is somewhere between 17 and 19 million pills. If you missed your chance to get rid of your old or unused prescription drugs, another statewide take-back will take place on Saturday, October 29.
