Cameras To Be Installed on Mississippi River Bridges

November 28, 2003 - Posted at 8:06 a.m. CDT

HELENA, AR - Surveillance cameras are to be installed on all four bridges carrying traffic to and from Arkansas across the Mississippi River.

Arkansas will install the cameras on the two bridges that link Arkansas with Mississippi, the U.S. 49 bridge at Helena, and the U.S. 82 bridge at Greenville, near Lake Village.  Meanwhile, Tennessee highway officials are planning installation of cameras on the two bridges between Memphis and West Memphis, the Interstate 40 bridge and the I-55 bridge.

The four spans have all been designated strategic crossings by national transportation officials.  About a thousand bridges carry that designation.

The cameras aren't intended to prevent a terrorist attack, but to allow officials to respond more quickly to terrorists or vandals.
