HATTIESBURG, Miss. (ASU) – Opening its 2011-12 season, the Arkansas State men's golf team shot a combined 582 Monday at the 9th Annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate to finish the tournament's first day of competition in 12th place among 15 teams.
Despite cutting eight strokes off its first-round score, the Red Wolves remained in 12th place after the completion of the second 18 holes. ASU turned in a 295 for the initial 18 holes, but four of its five competing players either matched or improved their score in the second round to help the Red Wolves end the day just four strokes behind 11th-place Southeastern Louisiana. ASU's second-round 287 matched its lowest single-round score in 11 of its 12 tournaments played a year ago.
Currently tied for 17th place to lead the Red Wolves, senior Chris Pledger is looking for his 11th top-20 career finish. Pledger posted a first-round 73 but came back in the second round to card a 2-under 69 that was only one stroke above his career-low round.
Competing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Christian Pitz shot a combined 144, which included an even-par 71 for the second round, to end the day tied for 32nd place. Joining Pledger and Pitz among the top-50 leaders was Wessel Zwiegers, who stands tied for 46th place with a combined 146.
