ASU Men's Golf opens season at Sam Hall Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (ASU) – Opening its 2011-12 season, the Arkansas State men's golf team shot a combined 582 Monday at the 9th Annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate to finish the tournament's first day of competition in 12th place among 15 teams.

Despite cutting eight strokes off its first-round score, the Red Wolves remained in 12th place after the completion of the second 18 holes.  ASU turned in a 295 for the initial 18 holes, but four of its five competing players either matched or improved their score in the second round to help the Red Wolves end the day just four strokes behind 11th-place Southeastern Louisiana.  ASU's second-round 287 matched its lowest single-round score in 11 of its 12 tournaments played a year ago.

Currently tied for 17th place to lead the Red Wolves, senior Chris Pledger is looking for his 11th top-20 career finish.  Pledger posted a first-round 73 but came back in the second round to card a 2-under 69 that was only one stroke above his career-low round.

Competing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Christian Pitz shot a combined 144, which included an even-par 71 for the second round, to end the day tied for 32nd place.  Joining Pledger and Pitz among the top-50 leaders was Wessel Zwiegers, who stands tied for 46th place with a combined 146.

Also competing for ASU, junior Matt Howton is tied for 61st place after posting a 75 for each of the first two rounds.  Howton's 75 shot for both rounds is just two strokes above his career-low round.  Chance Holden recorded a combined 156 to end the day in 81st place.

The tournament, hosted by Southern Miss at the Hattiesburg Country Club, is led by Mississippi with a 558, while South Alabama stands second with a 560 and Louisiana-Lafayette third with a 562.

ASU will conclude play at the two-day tournament tomorrow with the final round.
