School Districts Responding to State Improvement List

December 1, 2003 - Posted at 7:54 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Appeals are due in early to mid-December from public school districts with schools on the state's latest "improvement list."

The department compiled the list in response to the federal No Child Left Behind Act.  The 342 schools listed comprise about a third of Arkansas 1,100 schools.  Listed schools failed to make satisfactory gains on statewide exams.

The federal law requires school districts to allow students attending listed schools to transfer to a higher achieving school if there is one in the district.

Districts can be asked to be removed from the improvement list if they can show the data or calculations were inaccurate or if at least ten percent of students in an academically troubled subgroup improved to the proficient level from one year to the next.
