13-year-old in custody after bringing prescription pills to school

COTTER, AR (KAIT)- An 8th grader at Cotter High School is in the custody of Baxter County officials after an investigation revealed she brought prescription pills to the school and gave them to students.

According to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, a deputy who is also the resource officer for the Cotter Public Schools was alerted Thursday afternoon that five students had consumed Xanax pills at school.

Officers learned that a 13-year-old 8th grader took six pills from her stepfather and brought them to the school concealed inside a calculator.  Officers say she then gave the pills to four other 7th and 8th grade students.

Each of the students were evaluated by the school nurse, but no further medical attention was immediately required.  The students involved have been suspended from school pending expulsion hearings on September 22nd.

The student who brought and distributed the pills is in a juvenile detention facility.  She is  charged with four felony counts of delivering a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession.  She will appear later in Baxter County Circuit Court.
