Ribbon cutting marks grand opening for walking trail

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Medallion Foods and Arkansas State University-Newport celebrated the grand opening of the Medallion Walking Trail Monday with a ribbon cutting ceremony and inaugural walk.

Construction on the half-mile trail began in June and the trail has actually been open for about a month now. Monday's ceremony emphasized the partnership between the business and education industries.

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, Medallion Foods employees took part in the inaugural walk. However, ASU-Newport Chancellor Larry Williams said many people have already taken advantage of the trail.

"We do have a lot of people who walk early in the day, early in the morning, late in the evening," Dr. Williams said.

Williams also mentioned the importance of the trail for employees.

"The employees can receive 30 minutes per day, three days a week wellness activity time," he said.

The trail currently has seating sections located along the walk and there will soon be an aerobics station available as well.

The trail is open to anyone who wishes to improve their physical well being.
