ASU Women’s Golf leads ORU Shootout

From Arkansas State University

The Arkansas State women's golf team recorded a combined 612 at the ORU Shootout on Monday to finish the tournament's first two rounds of competition in first place among 14 teams.

The Red Wolves ended the first round in fifth place, but cut 20 strokes off their first-round score to climb to the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes of play. A-State shot a second-round 296 that was not only the lowest by any team at the tournament, but also the lowest by the Red Wolves since posting a 292 at their first tournament of the 2010-11 season.

Looking for its first tournament title since winning the Lady Red Wolf Classic almost exactly one year ago, A-State will enter the tournament's final round with a five stroke advantage over second-place Redlands. UTEP, which sits third, is seven strokes behind the Red Wolves.

ASU was led by four players that ended the day among the top-25 leaders, including Jennifer Welch in a tie for seventh place with a combined 152 (76-76). Anna Carling, who followed her first-round 80 up with a 73 to finish with a total 153, is tied for 10th place. Both Welch and Carling are in position to claim their first top-10 finish of the season.

Courtney Manning shot a 78 and 76 for the first two rounds, respectively, to place her tied for 16th, while Jennifer Loiacano had the most dramatic turnaround of the day among ASU's competing golfers. Loiacano shot an 86 for the initial 18 holes, but rebounded to card a career-best 71 that was also the lowest single-round score of the day by any player.

Also competing for ASU, Sarah Landry shot a 162 (82-80) to end the day tied for 37th place.

The ORU Shootout will conclude today with the third and final round.
