Health Department Expects to Run Out of Flu Shots Today

December 12, 2003 - Posted at 7:59 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Flue vaccine may still be available in hospitals or doctors' offices, but the state Department of Health expects to run out of shots today.

Health Department Dr. Sandra Snow says there were fewer than 3,000 doses available yesterday at Arkansas health units.  That's out of the 170,000 doses obtained by the state Health Department this year.  The figure does not include the number of doses available privately.

Last year, the state ordered 150,000 doses but did not use them all because it was a mild flu year.

The Health Department is urging people in high-risk groups to be vaccinated.

A vaccine based on a live virus is also available through private doctors for healthy people aged five to 49.
