Many stores hiring temporary help for the holidays

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Halloween decorations still line store shelves across Jonesboro, but many retailers are now hiring for the holidays.

"We are looking for part-time associates who put the customer first," Sandra Sneed, J.C. Penney store manager, said. "We want a smile, some energy and (people who) have some fun."

The National Retail Federation estimates a slight increase in holiday sales this year, and retailers are expected to hire nearly 500,000 seasonal workers. Target says it will bring in more than 90,000 workers during the next few months – 75 of those jobs at its store in Jonesboro.

"We're going to have needs all over the store from Starbucks to the truck team to the sales floor," Target team leader Samantha Tucker said.

Many seasonal workers hope to gain full-time employment with companies past the holidays. Last year, Target retained 40 percent of its seasonal workers nationwide.

"Usually, seasonal hiring is about three months," Tucker said, "but a lot of our team members do decide to stay on."

Kohl's announced its stores are hiring 40,000 people this holiday season, up five percent from last year. Best Buy will add 15,000 new temporary employees. J.C. Penney says, nationwide, it will hire 35,000 people for the busy shopping season.

"We rely a lot on extra help to get us through the holidays for all the extra customers and extra traffic that we anticipate," Sneed said.

To apply for holiday help, most big box retailers have kiosks where someone can submit an application. Managers also advise people to visit their stores' career page online for more information.
